Audio enthusiasts know that the environment can significantly impact sound quality. This is where room correction comes in—a process that tailors your sound system's output to the unique acoustic characteristics of your space, enhancing both sound quality and accuracy. Let's delve into what room correction is, its benefits, and how you can implement it on your WiiM Pro, WiiM Pro Plus, WiiM Amp, WiiM Ultra to transform your listening experience. (Room correction isn't supported on WiiM Mini due to hardware constraints.)

What is Room Correction?

Room correction involves adjusting the audio output of a sound system to account for the specific acoustic characteristics of a room. This adjustment enhances sound quality and ensures accurate sound reproduction, making your listening experience more enjoyable and true to the original recording.

The Benefits of Room Correction

1. Improved Sound Quality

Room correction systems analyze a room's acoustic properties and make adjustments to minimize negative effects like echoes, reverberations, and standing waves. The result is clearer and more accurate sound reproduction.

2. Compensation for Room Acoustics

Every room has unique acoustic traits that affect sound quality. Room correction compensates for these traits, adjusting audio output to match the original recording closely. This is crucial in rooms with hard surfaces that reflect sound or in oddly shaped spaces where sound distribution is uneven.

3. Optimized Listening Experience Across Different Spaces

Whether in a small bedroom, a large living room, or a basement, room correction ensures your audio system is optimized for the best possible listening experience, regardless of room size or layout.

4. Enhanced Detail and Clarity

By correcting frequency response anomalies and time-based errors, room correction brings out the detail and clarity in music and audio content. This means you can hear each instrument and voice more distinctly, enhancing the overall listening experience.

5. Adaptability to Different Listening Preferences

Some room correction systems allow users to customize the correction curve according to their personal preferences. This means you can tweak the sound to be warmer, brighter, more bass-heavy, etc., based on what you enjoy most.

6. Integration with Home Theater Systems

For home cinema enthusiasts, room correction ensures an immersive and accurate surround sound experience. It balances the soundstage and ensures effects move smoothly across the room, mimicking a movie theater experience.

7. Balanced Bass Response

Achieving a balanced bass response can be challenging. Room correction helps even out bass frequencies, reducing boominess and muddiness that can occur when bass waves interact poorly with room dimensions and furnishings.

8. Increased Sweet Spot Size

Typically, there's a specific spot in a room (the sweet spot) where the audio sounds the best. Room correction can help increase the size of this sweet spot, making the audio more enjoyable from more positions within the room.

In summary, room correction is a powerful tool for anyone looking to get the best performance out of their audio system. It customizes the audio output to match the specific acoustics of the room, ensuring a more enjoyable and accurate listening experience.

Guidelines for Room Correction in WiiM devices (WiiM Pro, WiiM Pro Plus, WiiM Amp, WiiM Ultra)

Before Calibration

1. Ensure Proper Speaker Placement:

  • Avoid obstructions around the speakers.

  • Set the volume to a moderate level.

  • Close doors and windows.

  • Keep the room as quiet as possible.

2. Configure Parameters:

  • Target Curve: Choose the desired frequency response curve before room correction.

  • Frequency Range: Adjust the frequency range to be corrected. Exclude frequencies enhanced by your speakers.

  • Gain: Set the gain according to the room's acoustic characteristics and personal preference.

  • Q Value:

    • Lower Q values for smooth frequency response adjustments.

    • Higher Q values for precise correction of specific frequency peaks and dips, though it may cause "ringing."

3. Subwoofer: Currently, room correction is not compatible with subwoofers. Check your subwoofer's crossover frequency and ensure the correction range starts above this crossover.

During Calibration

1. Preparation:

  • Remove the protective case from your Apple phone.

  • Hold the phone as far away from your body as possible.

  • Point the microphone towards the speaker you are measuring.

  • Place the microphone at ear level.

2. Microphone Placement:

  • Ensure the microphone, listener’s ears, and speaker’s acoustic center are at the same height.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Room Correction

1. Open the WiiM Home app and navigate to the 'Device' tab.

2. Tap the gear icon to access device settings, then tap Room Correction.

3. Tap the ‘Next’ button to start Room Correction setting.

5. Sit where you typically listen, positioning your iOS and Android device at ear height. (image below is outdated)

6. Wait 10 seconds for calibration.

7. Wait about one minute for analysis.

8. A customized parametric equalizer will be displayed and configured successfully.

9. Adjust the specification settings for Room Correction as needed.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your audio system delivers the best possible performance tailored to your unique listening environment. Enjoy a more accurate and immersive sound experience with room correction.
